It looks joyful and relatively easy, but Northern Soul is actually quite the skill to master. The Northern Soul scene came into its own in the 1970s, but still has a massively dedicated following to this day. The hardest part of mastering the dance is knowing that there are no formal rules to it – it’s basically sliding one foot whilst you swivel on the other, but all whilst keeping good posture and never looking down, so even the simplest of steps can require the utmost concentration.

Meet Wendy

Northern Soul is in My Soul

Northern Soul has always been in my Soul

Wendy’s Northern roots were birthed over a century ago with her Great Grandmother, Kitty Shaw dancing professionally in the Victoria Glee Club in Manchester in the 1870s, a Grandmother who was the first ballet dancer to start a dancing school in Kendal in 1916 and a Mother as a ballet student and teacher in Manchester.

Wendy has traversed the world of dance, from being a professional ballerina for Capab Ballet company to dancing for Jazzart, a Jazz dancing company, and experimenting with Northern Soul dance in the 1980s.

Wendy is a qualified and licensed Northern Soul dance teacher, having obtained her license through the founder of Northern Soul Dance in the UK, Sharon L D Sullivan, BSc. Psych, MSC. Nutr., Fellow UKAPTD, Master/Examiner NSDLPTD
